What is Reddit?
This is the Reddit homepage.
|
Reddit is a community, which contains basically everything. It's a great place to socialize, discuss things, ask for opinions, debates, etc. The community is broken down into specific groups and they call these "subreddits".
Let's say, you're an NBA fan like me, there is a subreddit for NBA and the topics there are only NBA related stuffs. Registered Reddit users are called "Redditors". They can submit content, such as text and link posts and they are allowed to comment on submissions and vote (up or down) on them. Voting is important on Reddit. The post with most upvotes will be displayed on the front page of Reddit. I'll get into that later. |
How to use Reddit?
Welcome to Reddit! Now, this is your front page. (Notice the red colored "Front" on the upper left?) Front page = Home page. You'll see different kinds of posts on your front page. You can sort them by hot, new, rising, top, etc. These posts came from Redditors (Registered Reddit users), like you. They came from the highest upvoted post from your subreddits. |
As you can see, all subreddits with "basketball" on their title or description appeared on the results. Even posts from different subreddits with basketball on their post also showed up on the results.
Quick tip: All subreddits have /r/ before their name. For example, /r/nba or /r/basketball. Moving on. |
I selected the NBA subreddit or /r/nba. Every subreddit has their own designs. So keep in mind that not all subreddit will look the same.
There is atleast 1 moderator on every subreddit. Moderators control the subreddit. They can approve and delete posts, they can also ban users. (if you got banned, you're only banned from the specific subreddit, not on all of them). You can still read posts from the subreddit, but you can't post, comment or vote anymore. |
Reminder: Always check the sidebar of every subreddit. (It's on the right)
Every subreddit has their own rules, so take the time to read them before posting or commenting, or else you might end up getting banned by the mods. Next, if you like a subreddit, you can subscribe to them, so you can easily find them on your subreddit list. You can also see how many people have subscribed and how many are currently online. You can choose a flair. Flair is a logo that will show up beside your username whenever you post or comment. |
Submitting a Link or Text content. There are reminders above of what to submit and not to submit. Some subreddits have their own specific requirements on submitting, so make sure to read them first.
Click on your username on the upper right to go to your profile page.
Here on your profile, "Everyone" can see all the things you posted and commented. There's no hide option. So when you go to my profile, you'll see the same thing shown on the screenshot. So think twice before submitting your posts and comments. You can delete your post and comment, then it won't appear on your profile anymore.
I submitted a text with the title "BeardedMambaTV" on the Test Subreddit or /r/test, and I commented on my own post with "This is a test comment." Notice the up and down arrow beside the post and comment? They're called upvote and downvote.
Redditors can upvote posts and comments that they like or downvote what they don't. Whenever you submit something, you automatically upvoted your own post and comment, This is the default setting.
Last but not the least, "Karma Points". It's the basis on which Post or Comments will show up first. For example, the comment with the highest points will be on top, then the rest will follow.
Some subreddits require certain karma points before you can comment and submit link/text.
There are 2 kinds of Karma points: Post Karma and Comment Karma.
Post Karma: In my picture above, I submitted a post with the title BeardedMambaTV, and you can see that there is a "1" in the middle of the upvote and downvote button. That's Post Karma. If redditors upvoted my post, then my Post Karma will increase. Take note that your own vote doesn't count.
Comment Karma: Same picture above, the comment that I made, you'll notice a 1 point after my username. That's Comment Karma. Same rules with Post Karma, If redditors upvoted my comment, then my Comment Karma will increase. Your own vote still doesn't count.
Note: Points can reach negative scores. For example, you can have a -30 points for your Comment Karma. For Post Karma, it can reach negative but you won't see it.
That's all. Thank you and I hope you enjoy using Reddit.
